Cutting Beauty School Funds.
The beauty and spa industry isn't just a hustle—it’s how our people build wealth, stay independent, and keep our dollars in the community. But right now, politicians are quietly closing the door on the next generation of Black cosmetologists, barbers, and estheticians.
State and federal rule changes are cutting financial aid and tuition assistance for trade and cosmetology programs. Here is the real talk on what’s happening, how it hits our community, and how we can take action today.
The Breakdown: What’s Going On?
-
Price Spikes Overnight: In states like Kansas, high schoolers used to get state aid for cosmetology classes costing parents around $700 out-of-pocket. Now that funding is cut, out-of-pocket tuition is spiking to $12,000–$17,000.
-
Federal Aid Under Fire: Proposed federal loan rules target trade programs with strict earnings to debt ratios. Cosmetology and barber schools are at the very top of the list to lose federal loan eligibility completely.
-
The Trap: States force you to complete up to 1,500 hours of school to get licensed, but now they’re stripping away the financial aid needed to pay for those hours.
-

Why This Hits the Black Community Hardest?
-
Blocking Generational Wealth: Salons, suites, and shops are foundational pillars of Black entrepreneurship. Taking away financial aid cuts off one of our clearest paths to ownership and financial freedom.
-
Fewer Black Stylists & Estheticians: When tuition goes through the roof, young Black talent gets priced out. That means fewer licensed pros who actually know how to handle textured hair, melanated skin, and Black wellness.
-
Keeping Us in Debt or Out of the Game: If you can’t get federal student loans, you either have to take high-interest private loans, pay out of pocket, or give up on your dream entirely.
Let’s protect our industry and keep the door open for the next generation.
